Building your Career with a Recognised Business Qualification
Brighton School of Business and Management’s Definitive Guide to HNCs and HNDs
If you know the career path you want to take and are looking to receive practical training in that field, then a HNC or HND course could be the qualification for you. Whether you have just completed your A-levels and starting your career journey, or if you are wishing to refocus your career aspirations, then this is the choice for you.
HNCs (Higher National Certificates) and HNDs (Higher National Diplomas) focus on ‘learning by doing’ and provide skills that you can use in a particular job. They have a strong emphasis on developing practical skills alongside specialist knowledge and understanding for the business sector you want to pursue.
And because HNCs and HNDs are designed to give you the skills for a particular field of work, they can lead straight to a career. You can also use the qualifications to progress within your current career to gain professional status.
Managers in businesses need a variety of skills, which are in demand from companies, whether you want to work in Travel and Tourism, Retail or even in Manufacturing. You can learn these skills through study for a Business HNC or HND with Brighton School of Business and Management (BSBM).
Both HNC and HND courses also enables students to study a subject to see if they like it, before deciding whether to take it to degree level. They also provide a practical, group-based approach to learning, and are a more affordable alternative to studying a traditional degree at University.
In this blog, you will gain information about:
- The differences between HNCs and HNDs
- What benefits you will gain from studying for either qualification
- An insight into distance learning and its advantages for study

- Why Brighton School of Business and Management has built a strong reputation as the ‘go to’ study centre for distance learning HNDs and HNCs.
What is a HNC?
A full-time Higher National Certificate (HNC) takes one year to complete, or two years part-time. Many HNC courses cover the same subjects as an HND, but a HNC is one level below a HND (it’s generally equivalent to the first year at university).
You normally need one higher level qualification, such as an A level, to enter an HNC course.
The course we recommend at the Brighton School of Business and Management (BSBM) is the Higher National Certificate (HNC) in Business, as it provides a very strong foundation in management best practice; it covers all essential business and management areas, such as Marketing, Human Resources and Finance.
How will you benefit from an HNC?
An HNC provides a great introduction to higher education
A lot of people choose this route of study if they are not 100% sure what they wish to study at University. The HNC allows you to discover the world of higher education without the cost of University and provides a more practical aspect of learning which is more suited to some individuals.
It starts you on the path to a full degree
If you decide you enjoy your chosen HNC subject and want to pursue the subject further, then on completing your HNC you may then be able to complete a relevant HND in one year. This can then be converted into an undergraduate degree through further study.
Gaining a HNC boosts your career
An HNC is a valued qualification in its own right and is often a pathway into full-time employment. HNCs are designed to meet the needs of employers and provide the practical skills you need to do a job and the theoretical knowledge your employer will expect you to have. It is highly respected and accepted by all employers in the public and private sectors and by higher education institutions, both in the UK and internationally. Achieving your HNC in Business through studying an accredited distance learning course is becoming the norm.
What is a HND?
A Higher National Diploma (HND) can be differentiated from a Higher National Certificate (HNC) by the amount of time it takes to complete the course. A HND normally takes two years to complete full time, or three to four years when studied part time.
HND qualifications are more practical than a traditional degree which means that you will gain valuable skills for the workplace. By choosing a HND route to achieving your higher education qualification you can benefit from developing your career/employability skills and gain opportunities to apply your skills in the workplace through projects and placements.
“This is just a quick e-mail to thank you once again for all that you did for me, and to let you know that I successfully passed the Masters in Human Resource Management and Development and obtained my Associate CIPD membership”. Sophia Samuels, BSBM Business and HR HND Student
At BSBM we offer a range of HND business courses which are recognised in the UK and around the world as suitable qualifications for management positions.
For example, an ideal choice for a professional development course has got to be the HND in Business Management, the UK accredited Pearson qualification ranked on the UK National Qualifications Framework at Level 5 degree level course. The qualification is recognised by public and private sector employers all over the world.
How will you benefit from an HND?
You can top up to a full degree
A HND is considered the equivalent of two years of degree study, which means you can often enter on the final year of a related degree after completing a HND. A top-up degree, also offered by BSBM, allows you to top-up your HND to an honours degree. A HND or equivalent is an excellent qualification in itself, but depending on your career ambitions, you may decide that studying a little longer would be beneficial.
HNDs offer great career prospects
A HND can train you to be a great business all-rounder, helping you to perform effectively and make great progress in the workplace. Prospective employers will know that people with a HND qualification will have specific interests and abilities in the industry they’ve studied. So you have a great chance of putting the specific skills and training you’ve received on your HND course into practice and get a job.

A great entry point for professional qualifications
Many professional bodies in the UK recognise the quality and value of an HND qualification, which can provide benefits such as exemptions (partial and full) to professional body exams and an HND may be accepted as a professional membership entry requirement.
What is distance learning?
Distance learning allows you to get a university-level education without having to physically attend a University campus. You’ll have access to all of the world-class teaching and support that BSBM has to offer, but all of your lectures, tutorials and assessments will take place online.
“Online learning is not the next big thing, it is the now big thing” . Donna J. Abernathy
Some activities are scheduled – such as online meetings with your Tutor – but otherwise you’re free to access and work through the video lectures, reading materials and other online activities at your convenience. Tutorial support is provided via a virtual learning environment, telephone, email or other electronic means.
In recent years the advent of the internet and widespread use of the computer has led to a huge growth in distantly delivered tuition and study.
How you are assessed?
HNCs and HNDs are assessed through assignments, projects and practical tasks that you complete throughout the course.
If you successfully complete an HNC or HND, the grades in each subject unit are shown as:
Why are so many students choosing to study via distance learning?
Cost and flexibility are major drivers in this move to online learning and a HNC or HND is significantly cheaper than going to University
Compared with going to University, distance-learning education is a very good investment of your money. Not only are the tuition fees for an HNC and HND distance-learning programme substantially lower compared to a University Degree, but a student also saves on the expenses related to accommodation, transportation and classroom materials.
In fact, the tuition fees for an entire distance learning HND from BSBM are only £3250 (which covers all study materials, personal Tutor support and assessments). This means you will graduate with much less debt than if you went down the traditional university route.
Distance learning offers greater flexibility in how, when and where you study
One of the problems with attending university is that you need give up so much of your time to study. Taking a HNC or HND online course gives you much greater flexibility and you can often access modules when and where you want. Study an HNC or HND with BSBM and structure your coursework in your own way. For example, you can study in the evening to make the course fit straightforwardly around your life commitments.

“I want to send my appreciation for all your help, this course has contributed massively to my personal and profession development. I feel now I can pursue a fulfilling career within the business sector. I am hoping to further myself both at University and on the Prince 2 Project Management course, as this course has given me so much ambition to achieve more”. Keith Robinson, BSBM Business HNC Student
The breadth of coverage that a business management HND or HNC provides means that students can also discover their niche, find areas in which they want to specialise, e.g. in project management or marketing, and also go onto more advanced education such as completing their degree or opting to take on a postgraduate course. They even have the core knowledge that can help them start their own businesses and become the entrepreneurs of the future.
BSBM students that have gained a distance-learning HND or HNC have gone on to have successful careers in managerial roles in businesses in the private sector, such as in Travel and Tourism and in Retail and in the public sector. Some have specialised in Marketing, Accounting, HR and Project Management, and others have gone on to run their own successful businesses.
Studying a HND online is one of the most important decisions you can make. By taking an online HNC or HND course, you not only get an excellent qualification that employers recognise world-wide, but you will leave equipped with the practical skills that you will need in a wide range of business settings, placing you ahead of others in the job market.
