Advice from the Management Gurus

Posted on : Friday, February 6th, 2009

“Management is efficiency in climbing the ladder of success; leadership determines whether the ladder is leaning against the right wall” – Stephen Covey

This quote from one of the leading management gurus of our time highlights one of the differences between management and leadership. In this case, emphasizing the strategic, future focused, aspect of leadership, and in this context it’s useful as the starting point of a discussion about the differences, and similarities, between managers and leaders (a discussion that could last forever).

If you are aspiring to be known as a leader, rather than a manager, this quote is worth committing to memory !

We also use it when discussing career and professional development planning, quoting it and then reshaping it to read:

“Achieving targets in your professional development plan shows that you are managing your development plan effectively, but it doesn’t mean that you are heading in the right direction”

At regular intervals, at least every 6 months, you need to look again at current and forecast changes in the world of business generally, and in detail in your particular business sector, to make certain that what you are aiming for will be worth achieving.
